Very few issues in Christianity are as divisive as the acceptance of the LGBT community in the church. Many Christians lean toward one of two extremes: sacrificing truth for the sake of grace, or sacrificing grace for the sake of truth. Jesus was able to love all people and yet still hold onto his beliefs. So can you. Even when it’s messy.
The Messy Grace Series combines biblical teaching from Caleb Kaltenbach, a pastor with gay parents, with stirring testimonies from an author with a transgender sister, a college student who lived a double life, a former lesbian hip-hop artist – now married to a man, and a celibate pastor who’s same-sex attracted. This four-episode series will inspire and empower Christ-followers to completely love their LGBT neighbors (and any other neighbor) while remaining committed to Scripture.
Description
- Teaching by Caleb Kaltenbach
- 4-video episodes on DVD
- Episode 1: Love (24 minutes)
- The Apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 13, “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.” While Christians are called to speak the truth, we are called to so in love. How can Christians faithfully balance the tension between love and truth?
- Episode 2: Truth (26 minutes)
- “What is truth?” This was Pilate’s dismissive rebuttal to Jesus’ claim, “Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” Christians are called to speak the truth with confidence, forthrightness, and a refusal to compromise.
- Episode 3: Grace (27 minutes)
- “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God,” says the Apostle Paul in Romans 3. We are all born as sinners, and our lives are shaped not only by our own sin but by the sins of others. Life is messy. We’re messy. But, so is grace. As Paul goes on to say: “But, the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” And, that grace is offered to everyone.
- Episode 4: Identity (25 minutes)
- The Spirit of the Age tells us to find our identity in all kinds of temporal things: our jobs, our relationships, our sexuality. But, the Spirit of God encourages us to find our identity in Christ, to set our hearts and minds on things above. That’s where true freedom lies.
- Episode 1: Love (24 minutes)
Rusty –
The Messy Grace Series DVD is excellent. It’s professionally made and the videos are excellent. The series covers subject matter that we all should learn about and believe in. I’ve seen Caleb’s work at Discovery Church and am so happy that he took the additional steps to make this study available. I highly recommend it for community group studies or even better and entire church project.

This is easily one of the best series I have seen on the topic of engaging with those who are experiencing LGBT attraction. We are using this in our church right now and it produced a lot of good discussion on the issues of biblical truth and grace on this issue and in our lives in general. Highly recommended
